Narrative Plan 2

We had a talk about what we need to do for the narrative such as creating a better story. To cut down on reliability we will use the 2 boys in the group as the other actors. We are planning on filming more narrative to give context to the narrative we also have.

We aim to film a scene including 3 actors. They will meet up at a park and have a conversation/fight and then it will be revealed that he is leaving him for another boy. We will do this through varying shots such as him walking to the park, meeting then fighting and a few cinematic shots.

We plan to film in South Park in Darlington.

✦Location Update ✦

We emailed Darlington Civic theatre to see if we could use their stage for our performance.

We will be meeting him sometime this week and therefore we will post an update.

Update
We have decided not to use the civic as it is too much hassle, it would have been cool to film in the theater however it is just not possible for us.

Pitch - Letter To the record label

To whom it may concern,
I am a student at Queen Elizabeth Sixth form, We are in our second year of A-Levels and we have been tasked to create a music video of a song of our choice. We would love to create a video using the song Biblical by Biffy Clyro. Of course we need your permission to do this as to avoid copyright infringement. What we are creating is not commercialised and will not gain any profit. It is purely for academic purposes, we would love to hear back from you.
Kirsty Evers

We submitted this through the WMG question submitter.

Music Video Study Day - Jakes Tips

Jake Wynne is a professional editor and director, He worked in commercials and music videos for people such as Peter Andre, Spice Girls and many more etc.

Jake gave a lot of good tips on editing and how to film correctly.

Jake Wynne Editing Showreel 2014 from Jake Wynne on Vimeo.

Editing
  • Definitely need good footage to work with
  • Wide shots
  • Go through the whole song on every shoot
  • With handheld cameras - Explore the scene
  • Visually layer with depth of field
  • All performance first then the narrative
  • Don't give everything away at the start - Think about the structure
  • 120-200 cuts in professional music videos
He stated that the number one problem for him was awkward performers, we need to use performers who want to do good and will act professionally in front of the camera.

For narrative - only do it if it brings something to the performance if not it's best to stay performance based.

Location - Use a variety - Quite a few locations and a lot of run throughs will give you a lot of footage to work with. Also bring the locations in slowly don't use them in the first few minutes of the song.
  • Location is very dependent on the song
  • Utilise the area to it's full potential
  • Make sure the lighting is correct.
The best type of transition is none - Cuts are the best thing to use for a professional music video.

At the end of the session he gave a talk about his specific videos and also answered some questions - I recorded this so i could hear it better.

Overall Jake was very helpful with the filming and editing process as he does this professionally - he really gave a good insight on how to work properly and the tips he said will be used alongside our work. The most important point i took was that we need to make sure the performers are the best they can be because thats what the video relies on.

Pete Fraser is the author of Petes media blog. He came to the day with Jake Wynne who is music video editor and director.

Top Tips
  • Don't go for recent/obvious songs or ideas

  • The marking is split up like: Video 40, Digipack 10, Website 10, Evaluation 20 and Planning 20
Planning:
  • Storyboard
  • Shoot Early
  • Performers need to know the words

  • Do a few test shots first
  • Make sure the music is audible to the camera
  • Shoot at least 10 times - Including different set ups
  • Include lots of close ups
  • Must enthuse performers to get the best performance
  • Shoot more than you need
Edit:
  • Synch the performance first
  • Do effects work last
  • Show the whole picture instead of tiny detail
  • Upload Rough cut for feedback
  • Aim for Dynamic work - Compare with other videos

Choosing the Track
  • Avoid famous artists/songs
  • Think of the sub-genres
  • Strong visual ideas/concepts
  • 3 minutes or just under - not too long
  • Needs LYRICS and performance
  • Listen to advice.
  • Watch others works for inspiration
Other tips
  • Tidy Desktop
  • Use visuals that influence you
  • 'steal-o-matic' (find videos and scenes that influence you and use it)
  • Use real albums covers and websites to look at for inspiration
Overall Pete gave a lot of interesting tips and ideas and from what he said it's helped me understand how much effort there is going to be. The fact he gave tips for every process will help me to look back at this and understand what i need to do later on for my music video. I also know to not just focus on the video but also the digipak and website & everything else.
