Intertextuality - Andrew Goodwin

Intertextuality refers to the idea that music videos link in with other media texts such as films, tv, book etc. It's most likely that music videos will take inspiration from movies. Directors of videos are usually film directors to give it more of a cinematic feel. Some examples of intertextual references in music videos include:

Taylor Swift - Love Story - This video makes inter textual references to the fairytale and princess type of feel with her in a castle and it clearly references the story of Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare. This is undeniable as the song is about love. Using references that fit the song well will make a bigger impact. Since romeo and juliet is such a well known story it will be easy to spot for the audience.

Iggy Azalea - Fancy - This whole video is about intertextuality as it definitely references the 1995 film Clueless from the outfits to the scenes and location it is a obvious reference to a well known film with even using actors that resemble the main actors in the film.

Daft Punk - Harder Better Faster Stronger - This music video references the popular Japanese style of Anime, This stylizes the entire video by making a narrative based video without the band playing or showing up once. The video is creatively done where it does not show any people and it is animated.

Crusir - All Over - This music video is all about the references, it's animated like the one above however every single one is a reference to some other media text. It's creatively done for the indie band Crusir. The amount of references that can be spotted is like a game for how many the audience can get. It features people such as Travis Bickle and Jodie Foster from Taxi Driver, Beauty and the Beast from Disney, Hannibal Lecter and Agent Starling from Silence of the Lambs.
